medienwoche@IFA: BBC Director General – Public sector broadcasters can speed up digital revolution
Speaking at IFA the Director General of the BBC London, Mark Thompson, declared himself strongly in favour of involving the public sector broadcasting networks in the development of new media. It would be wrong to see public sector broadcasting solely as a problem and an anachronism. They have an important part to play in the develop-ment and introduction of new technologies, such as the shift from analogue to digital terrestrial television. In Germany as in the United Kingdom the long tradition established by such authorities means that they have a vast fund of knowledge, the head of the British Broadcasting Corporation emphasized in his keynote speech on the subject of “Public Service Broadcasting and New Media” on Tuesday during the medienwoche@IFA congress. This experience could be used to accelerate the pace of the digital revolution. For a long time now the digital platforms have no longer been serving splinter groups but represent a platform for the masses, Thompson stated. For example there were 8.5 million British and 5.1 million international users of the BBC web services during the Olympics, and 40 million video streams were accessed.
