Change Will Bring Digital Home To New Heights
An Interview with Steven Joe
President and CEO
D-Link Systems, Inc.
Q. During the Presidential election campaigns, the word heard most was “change”. What changes to you see on the horizon in consumer electronics?
Actually, the consumer electronics industry is, by its nature, defined by change. Therefore, it is safe to say that we can continue to expect the same fast-paced introductions of new technology and innovations that we have seen during the past quarter of a century. As long as people yearn for gadgets that make their lives and work easier and more fun, companies like D-Link will continue to satisfy that hunger. Technological changes are inevitable as we continue to try to pack more functionality, more ease of use and greater power-saving measures into smaller, more stylish packages. There are bound to be some significant price reductions as the market becomes even more competitive. However, D-Link’s philosophy has always been to offer its customers a value proposition of best quality products and services with the most affordable pricing.
Q. What technologies and products do you feel will have the biggest impact on consumers in the months ahead?
A. More and more homes are enhancing their digital capabilities, prompted largely by a major acceptance of the 802.11n standard for wireless connectivity. We will see increasingly sophisticated consumers buying more products that integrate and enhance the electronic house with remote automation controls, entertainment, media-sharing and security. And everything will be wireless, power over Ethernet (PoE) and/or MOCA-powered using the home’s existing wiring. Consumers are more security conscious, and today’s Internet Protocol (IP) video surveillance systems, including the popular D-Link models, provide greater peace of mind for homeowners wherever they may be.
Q. How are D-Link consumer products meeting the challenges of today’s economic climate as well as market demand?
A. Almost a decade ago, D-Link envisioned the digital home as a “future is now” reality, and quickly became a leader in offering the most convenient, affordable and state-of-the-art wireless technology available. We were among the first to ship routers with the draft 802.11n technology and continue to incorporate the IEEE standard into other networking products. For digital home entertainment, we offer a variety of media players for streaming video, music, photos and files, including DiVX, from PCs to TVs. Our 10-inch photo frame does much more than display pictures. – it’s wireless and lets users view weather, stocks, sports scores and other IP-based news without PCs. Our network attached storage (NAS) devices store terabytes worth of data and serve as the ideal file backup and recovery tool. Cameras, storage, security, entertainment – we have it all for the consumer who wants to stay connected.
Q. The new paradigm of the 21st Century is “green”. What is D-Link doing to help the cause?
A. The safety and integrity of our products is of great concern to us and key to our relationship with our customers. To that end we were the first networking company to receive ENERGY STAR certification for the external power adapters that accompany many of our best-selling products. Our D-Link Green program, which won a 2008 Technology Excellence Award from PC Magazine, is committed to saving the world’s environment by shutting down or reducing power consumption when not in use, by using recycled materials in our packaging, by complying with worldwide programs such as ENERGY STAR and ISO 14001 standards, and by offering incentives to consumers when they recycle D-Link products. We will continue to seek new avenues to protect the environment and help consumers save money by producing energy efficient products.
